May 18, 2018
Hello Sisters and Brothers,
The parties met again to bargain on May 15, 2018. The Union was optimistic because of the recent change in management at Elmwood residences and the funding increase announcement made by the Provincial government in April.
The Employer proposed a small wage increase, 2.5% retroactive to the 1st of January 2018, with opportunities to reopen wage negotiations in the near future. Although that is more than their previous offer it is still well below the $1.00 per hour increase and $750.00 signing bonus that the Union has maintained as its position to resolve bargaining. The Union also stated that the members have been waiting too long and have been disappointed too many times for them to resolve on the basis of future negotiations.
There was further discussion and a considerable improvement in communication between the parties but we were not able to reach agreement at that time. The Employer left the table saying they would continue to examine their financial position. The Union advised that job action would continue to escalate until the Employer made an offer that the Union could recommend to the membership.
Since that meeting, the parties have been in contact steadily and are working toward a proposal that the Union can bring to the membership with a recommendation and with some confidence that it will be ratified. Job action will continue as planned for the immediate future.
The parties remain in contact and are having constructive discussions. Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday the 22nd of May. Our bargaining team is optimistic that the Employer will bring forward a proposal that we are confident we can bring forward for ratification by the membership.
Stay tuned for further updates.
