SEIU-West will be hosting a BBQ at the Stonebridge Co-op Food Store on Thursday, August 31st from 10:30am-2:00pm. All proceeds are going 100% to the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre – we hope you and your family can join! During the BBQ, there will also be transportation to an action to demonstrate to the Saskatchewan Government that cuts hurt our communities, and that they must reverse all the cuts.
WHAT: BBQ Fundraiser for the local Saskatoon Food Bank with a nearby Stop the Cuts Action
WHERE: 511 Wellman Crescent, Saskatoon
WHEN: Thursday, August 31st at 10:30am
We’ve seen many people suffer since the latest budget was released – people will now have to pay out of pocket for services like podiatry, travel immunizations, and hearing aids. Many more are affected by the cuts to social services, including a reduction of the Transitional Employment Allowance rate and the cut to special need diet allowances. Along with these cuts, Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate is growing. Saskatchewan people are also facing wage rollbacks and an increase in PST with a new tax on children’s clothing. Saskatchewan already tops Canada in children’s food bank usage – if their guardians cannot get a good job, afford the rising cost of living, or receive the services they need, we are fearful this number will grow.
That’s why we are fundraising for the local food bank, and providing an opportunity to tell our government we do not accept the cuts. We will have transportation to and from the nearby Willows Golf Club where the Saskatchewan Party are hosting a Golf Tournament. We ask that you meet at the Co-op BBQ – 511 Wellman Crescent – at 10:30am on Thursday, August 31st in order to join the action. Don’t forget to bring your signs and invite your friends!
If you can’t make it on Thursday, please remember to send a letter to your MLA! By clicking this link, you will be directed to a letter campaign that will find your MLA for you. It’s easy, you just have to enter your postal code! And don’t forget, if you’re an SEIU-West member you can also enter the ‘Summer of Action’ Contest each time you connect with your MLA – the deadline is Labour Day!
