For Immediate Release – November 9, 2015
Saskatoon The members and leaders of SEIU-West are proud to celebrate Medical Radiation Technologists (MRT) week on November 8 to 14, 2015.
“MRTs are an essential part of our respected public health care team,” said Barbara Cape, President of SEIU-West. “It’s their job to prepare, inform and assess patients for procedures like angiograms and other radiology tests. MRTs are an essential part of ensuring successful medical procedures and work hard to complete a maximum number of procedures each day.”
However, the Saskatchewan Government has recently threatened the work of public MRI services with the passing of Bill 179 that will enable private MRI clinics to charge patients out-of-pocket for MRI scans within the province.
“This legislation endangers the functionality of our public health care system,” continued Cape. “A common recipe for privatization is to underfund public resources thereby weakening capacity – this is bound to get people upset and creates momentum for the general public to consider privatization.”
“In Alberta, wait times are the highest in the country, and they have privatized their MRI clinics – let’s learn from their mistake; we need to invest in our public health system and give our patients and staff the resources they need,” said Cape.
“Health care is a human right – the size of your wallet should have no impact on your access to health care,” added Cape. “Let’s do what is right and ensure that the dollars anticipated to be paid for private MRI’s be redirected towards the current system and processes we have in place.”
