MEDIA RELEASE: Education Workers reach Tentative Agreement

For Immediate Release – May 11, 2015

Weyburn – On May 8, the South East Cornerstone School Division and the SEIU-West bargaining team returned to the bargaining table, with the assistance of the Ministry of Labour appointed conciliator. The negotiations resulted in the parties reaching a tentative agreement.

The SEIU-West Bargaining team are out to meetings with the membership today and voting will occur after they have reviewed the tentative agreement. We will provide results of the vote when they become available.

“We will follow the direction provided by our membership. After all, this is about what they view is fair and reasonable.” said Maureen Jackiw, Administrative Assistant and SEIU-West Bargaining Committee Chair of Southeast Cornerstone.

“We know that our members want to be back in the schools and classrooms; driving the buses, cleaning the schools and assisting the students – that is their calling,” added Cape. “They believe investing in our children’s education should be priority number one. Our members believe this process has illustrated to the board of education it needs to recognize and value the skills delivered by our members.”

SEIU-West represents approximately 250 members employed as Education Assistants, Library Technicians, Custodians, Maintenance/Journeypersons, Kitchen/Cafeteria staff, Administrative Assistants and School Bus Drivers employed by the South East Cornerstone School Division in Weyburn, Estevan and 14 other rural communities.
