For Immediate Release: September 7, 2013
Saskatoon – Following the great Labour Day celebrations held across the province, Service Employees International Union (SEIU-West) is sponsoring a food drive in support of the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre.
“We’re doing this now because it’s the start of the school year and with that comes school lunches,” said Jason Monteith, SEIU-West Executive Board member and event organizer. “We really hope that the public will take part to help us fill up the trucks.’
“We are also only a few weeks away from Thanksgiving so the more items that come in, the more likely it will be a better holiday for the people of Saskatoon,” said Colleen Denniss, SEIU-West member. “I’m glad that Jason came up with this idea because it’s important for us to help out our neighbours no matter what community we come from.”
Both the Food Bank and the Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) have donated trucks to gather donations. “This is just one way for the labour movement to show the deep connections with our communities; and we are excited about the opportunity to fill both trucks to capacity,” said President Barbara Cape.
Members of SEIU-West are collecting donations on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 9 am to 5 pm at both Superstore locations in Saskatoon:
- West Side: 411 Confederation Drive; and
- East Side: 2901-8th Street East
SEIU-West represents more than thirteen thousand working people in the province of Saskatchewan. They include members who work in healthcare, education, municipalities, community-based organizations, retirement homes and other sectors. United by one union, SEIU-West, and one colour, purple – Purple Works in your community.
