Normally in this article, I talk about the outside forces that are influencing our work, our communities and our lives. Whether it’s the global issues around work, politics, or labour legislation – it’s all covered in this newsletter. But I want to look inward, towards the members that drive this union and continue to work to make this organization better and stronger.
As I write this, we have just had our first Executive Board meeting since the June Convention. We have five new Board members who stepped up and let their name stand for election. They are joining the current Executive Board members who have been guiding the work of the union for the last few years. Your Executive Board works to ensure that your dues become monies securely invested, that we are doing everything we can to operate this union within our means, and that we are being proactive in anticipating members’ needs and the issues that affect you.
Beyond the Executive Board, we have numerous Unit Executive members and Shop Stewards throughout the province. These are the members who see you at work everyday and work on your behalf to ensure that the employer is meeting the terms of the collective agreement, that you are treated fairly at work and that you have access to support and resources from your union.
In addition to these smart and savvy member leaders, you have SEIU-West staff throughout this province that defend and support existing members as well as recruit new members every day of the year. They educate, arbitrate, negotiate and help to agitate so that the needs and voices of SEIU-West
members are not ignored or marginalized.
As we celebrate Labour Day this September, let’s salute the working men and women of this province that keep us moving forward. I want you to join me in recognizing the network of union staff and activists who have worked so hard to make this union better for you and for all SEIU-West members.
We still have miles to go to make improvements, but working together, we can make SEIU-West a more perfect union.
Solidarity Brothers and Sisters, for the union makes us strong!
