For Immediate Release – July 13th, 2012
Swift Current – SEIU-West members invite the general public to attend the next of three barbeques (Saskatoon’s held July 6th, Moose Jaw’s on July 22) being held in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the Birth of Medicare in Saskatchewan.
Join your neighbours in Swift Current in Market Square on July 15, 2012 from 11 am to 1 pm. The cost is $1 for a hot dog and a drink
“We had a great turn out in Saskatoon last week. Many people who came out shared their stories of life before Medicare,” said Janice Platzke, Treasurer of SEIU-West. “Our volunteers commented that they had several people who expressed that they were happy to see someone celebrating the anniversary.”
After Saskatchewan broke ground with the introduction of Medicare, and with the support of the Federal government, other provinces followed suit and launched their own publicly funded healthcare systems. Swift Current has the honour of being the first region at the time to pilot Medicare; from there it spread throughout the Province and across the Nation. Canada’s healthcare system soon became the envy of the world.
Studies confirm that public healthcare systems are far more affordable than private-for-profit models, with a real emphasis in public sector upon the continued measure of quality assurance.
“It is extremely important that we celebrate and acknowledge our public health care system and make sure we continue to realize how fortunate we are to have a publically funded health care system available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay” said SEIU-West President Barbara Cape.
“We are celebrating with our Union and with our communities, this great achievement and we want to raise awareness and continue to remind our politicians just how much we deserve and value our public Medicare system” said SEIU-West member and Swift Current event coordinator, Chris Mulhall.
SEIU-West represents approximately twelve thousand working people in the province of Saskatchewan. They include members who work in healthcare, education, municipalities, community-based organizations, retirement homes and other sectors.
