UPDATED – Media Release: In Recognition of Medicare Fifty Years of Well-Being

July 5, 2012 – For Immediate Release

Saskatoon – SEIU-West members invite the general public to attend one of three barbeques being held in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the Birth of Medicare in Saskatchewan.

“Publicly funded, publicly administered and publicly delivered healthcare was a dream of the Saskatchewan citizens over 50 years ago. This dream was realized on July 1, 1962,” said Shelly Banks, Vice-President of SEIU-West. “Who knew then that Medicare would become such a major part of the Canadian identity?”

After Saskatchewan broke ground with the introduction of Medicare, and with the support of the Federal government, other provinces followed suit and launched their own publicly funded healthcare systems. Canada’s healthcare system soon became the envy of the world.
“It has taken the United States 50 years to recognize the value of what we have here in Canada,” continued Banks. “Clearly they are now beginning to understand that basic healthcare isn’t a business. It is a right that all Canadians enjoy and one founded upon our collective commitment to build a better society”.

Studies confirm that public healthcare systems are far more affordable than private-for-profit models, with a real emphasis in public sector upon the continued measure of quality assurance.

“I think it’s important that my union and I stand up for our public health care system to keep it public and available to every man, woman and child, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Heather MacKay, SEIU-West member. “It’s important that we have healthy people so they can lead productive, happy lives and contribute to this great province of ours.”

There will be 3 BBQs in the communities where SEIU-West has office locations – cost is $1 for a hot dog and a drink:

  • Saskatoon, Friendship Park – July 6, 2012 from 11 am to 5 pm
  • Swift Current, Market Square – July 15, 2012 from 11 am to 1 pm
  • Moose Jaw, Happy Valley Park – July 22, 2012 from 1 pm to 5 pm

SEIU-West represents approximately twelve thousand working people in the province of Saskatchewan. They include members who work in healthcare, education, municipalities, community-based organizations, retirement homes and other sectors.
