Saskatoon – The results are in from the provincial election and the members of Service Employees International Union – West (SEIU-West) are wondering what the impact of a second SaskParty majority will have on their work and the communities they live in.
“This was an important election season for the working people of Saskatchewan,” said Barbara Cape, President of SEIU-West. “Unionized or not, it is the people of this province that make Saskatchewan great. We will continue to engage with this new government on the needs of all people who live and work in all the communities in this province, not just the CEOs.”
Since the election was called in October, SEIU-West Member Political Organizers worked diligently to spread the word about the importance of this election and the need to ask critical questions of their local candidates, but most importantly, the need to vote.
“I’m a health care voter is a great campaign,” said Roberta Gough, “It’s simple and sends a statement that Health Care is an important to me and we will be continuing to send that message throughout our upcoming round of bargaining.”
As the health care provider members of SEIU-West prepare to go into their next round of negotiations with the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO), the leadership of SEIU-West is hopeful that things will go much better this time.
“As workers and voters, we will be requesting meetings with our provincial representatives and we do expect that they want to meet with us,” said Barbara Cape. In the past, SEIU-West members have had great difficulty getting meetings with their Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
Cape continues, “The ‘I’m a health care voter’ campaign is not over, it’s just beginning.”
SEIU-West represents approximately 12,000 Health Care providers across Saskatchewan.
