October 17, 2011
Members of the Unit’s bargaining team met with the Employer and his representative today at the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw. This was our first meeting since the expiry of the Collective Agreement on March 31, 2011. At this time the Unit’s bargaining team consists of Neil Daicon, Matt McGurk and Dwight Chartrand. Our thanks to Dwight for agreeing to step up and help us with this task on behalf of the Union membership. Also at the table from SEIU-West is Bob Desjarlais, Union Representative and Kerry Barrett, Negotiations Officer. Unfortunately, due to scheduling issues, only Neil, Bob and Kerry were able to attend today’s meeting. It is our hope that Dwight and Matt will be able to attend the meetings scheduled over the next few weeks.
The parties were delayed in starting the bargaining process for this round due to the lengthy delays in the settlement of the Collective Agreement between the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO) and Health Sciences Associations of Saskatchewan (HSAS).
The meeting today was simply for the parties to discuss the logistics and process of bargaining and to exchange and briefly discuss the respective proposal packages. In total the meeting with the Employer lasted less than four hours.
Without going into the specific details of the Employer’s proposals, it can be said that the parties have come to the table with what appears to be a sincere intent to work towards a speedy and amicable settlement. While we do have some concerns about the Employer’s proposed amendments, nothing at this point appears to be seriously contentious.
The parties have agreed to return to the table on October 31st. At that time we intend to provide a formal response to the Employer’s package and then to begin bargaining in earnest. We have set aside all day on October 31st as well as November 15th & 16th for the purposes of negotiations with the Employer. It is our intention to communicate with our membership in some fashion following these dates.
If you have any questions or would like to see what the Union tabled with the Employer, please feel free to talk with Neil.
