Extendicare Bargaining Update – September 6, 2011

Norm Zimmer, Extendicare’s Labour Relations Consultant, has advised me that the last draft of the Collective Agreement is agreed to and the parties are now ready to sign the document.  This morning, I spoke directly with Cathy Hauck, Regional Director.  We have scheduled a meeting of the parties to conduct the formal signing for Thursday, September 8th at 1:00pm.  This meeting will take place at the Parkside facility in Regina.

This morning, I also received an e-mail from Norm regarding the payment of the retroactive pay to all employees.  He has re-iterated the Employer’s agreement to pay all retro on cheques separate and apart from employees’ regular pay.  In addition, Norm, on behalf of the Payroll department, has committed to the following schedule for the issuance of retro pay:

  • Pay Ending Date October 2, retro period covering April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009
  • Pay Ending Date October 16, retro period covering April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010
  • Pay Ending Date October 30, retro period covering April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011 and April 1, 2011 to date of implementation of the new hourly wages rates.  To achieve the payments within the month of October 2011, retro-active pay for both periods will be on a single pay, but there will be two amounts shown, one for each retro period.

This has been a very long process but now brings this round of contract negotiations to a conclusion.  On behalf of the SEIU and the Union’s Negotiating team, I thank you for your patience.  We will be getting the new Agreement printed and distributed to the workplaces in the coming weeks.  If you have any questions or concerns about something covered by the Agreement, please talk with your Stewards and/or Unit Executive members.  If they need additional help they can contact either the Member Resource Centre or the appropriate Union Representative.
