Your SEIU-West Bargaining committee met with the Extendicare on April 6, 7, and 8 to commence bargaining. We presented our proposal package based on the members’ responses to the bargaining questionnaire and our membership meetings.
As we had anticipated, the language in the SEIU-West/SAHO collective agreement around the Call-In System was of interest to the employer. The parties discussed their issues regarding casual call in lists, seniority lists, utilization of stat holiday banks, vacation scheduling and the provision of certain information by the employer to the union, among other topics. While we did not get to the stage where we would have tabled our total monetary compensation package, we did inform the employer of the union’s position that full retroactivity must be paid, despite the length of time it has taken to get to the bargaining table.
At the end of our session, we believe that a considerable amount of progress has been made. We are in the process of confirming further bargaining dates at the start of May.
Your committee will be meeting on April 20 in Moose Jaw to work towards the drafting of a bargaining proposal package that will move us towards successfully concluding this round of negotiations.
